INTRODUCTION 

The Rengao are a people whose traditional 
home is Kontum Province in the central high- 
lands of South Vietnam. They number more 
than 10, 000 and speak a Mon-Khmer (Cambodian- 
like) language. Three nnain dialects may be 
identified: 1) Central Rengao, the principal 
dialect, spoken by villages to the west and north 
of Kontum City. 2) Southeastern Rengao 
('Bahnar-Rengao')» spoken to the east of and 
very near Kontum City along Route 5. 3) Northern 
Rengao ('Sedang-Rengao')> originally spoken to 
the north of Kontum City east of Route 14 in 
villages bordering the Sedang.
